While it’s easy to forget about user experience and SEO on mobile devices, we simply can’t. Mobile is becoming a larger and larger factor in 2017 that businesses simply can’t ignore. Here are 5 reasons why you should care about mobile SEO.

1. Mobile Dominates Search

If there’s one reason to care about mobile search, it’s this:

Back in 2015, Google announced that mobile search overtook desktop search in 10 countries including the US and Japan. More recent studies have indicated that mobile now accounts for almost 60% of searches.

Although this number varies from industry to industry, the point still stands that you must deliver a good experience on mobile. Based on these studies, it’s clear that more and more people are searching from non-desktop devices and your website needs to be able to be able to deliver a good experience for them if you want to rank well.

2. Google’s Mobile First Index

In November 2016, Google announced that they will be rolling out a mobile-first index. In the past Google has evaluated websites using the desktop version. However, because most people are searching the Web using mobile devices, they’ve decided to crawl and index websites based on the mobile version.

This is especially important for companies that have a mobile website but it may not be up to snuff. Inconsistent mobile and desktop experiences may make it difficult for Google to find all of the content on your website and include it in the search results. Businesses need to be sure that their mobile website is structured in a way where Google can easily find all of the content on mobile devices.

3. Mobile Is A Direct Ranking Factor

If you didn’t already know, having a mobile friendly website is a direct ranking factor in Google’s algorithm. While it’s currently not a large component of Google’s rankings factors, all signs point towards it becoming even more important in the future. Google understands that the line is becoming blurred between desktop and mobile experience and wanted to provide businesses with direct incentives to ensure they’re providing a good user experience across a variety of devices. If you’re not sure whether or not your website may be negatively impacted by this ranking factor, you can check your website using Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test. If it passes, you should be OK.

4. Mobile User Experience Matters

While a mobile friendly website comprises of a small portion of Google’s algorithm, user engagement metrics make up an even larger chunk. Previous data shows that engagement metrics are the 5th most important component of Google’s algorithm. As mentioned before, because mobile search has surpassed desktop, it’s likely that the majority of engagement metrics Google is measuring for your website come from mobile users.

If Google notices that many users on your mobile website are spending little time on your pages and quickly bouncing back to the search results, this can have a negative impact on rankings. Aside from ensuring your website is mobile-friendly, you will want to be confident that your key pages provide excellent experiences on mobile.

5. Google’s Push For AMP

If you need more evidence of the claim that mobile will be more important in the future, then consider Google’s AMP initiative. AMP stands for “Accelerated Mobile Pages”. AMP is a framework where your pages will load faster in mobile if you use stripped down code. Many major publishers, including Condé Nast, are implementing this framework.

The AMP project can be seen as an effort by Google to help improve the speed of the Web on mobile. Google is clearly obsessed with mobile speed and experience and this is proof they are pushing to constantly improve it.
